About me

I am an Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. I was a Postdoctoral Researcher in the Department of Electrical and Systems Engineering at the University of Pennsylvania under the supervision of Professor Alejandro Ribeiro. I received my PhD in Electrical Engineering from the University of Southern California under the supervision of Professor Mihailo R. Jovanovic. I received my BE in Automation and ME in Control Theory and Engineering from Zhejiang University, and my MS in Electrical Engineering from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities.

Research interests

My research focuses on application of principles and tools in optimization and control to the study of requirement-driven machine decision-making. I am particularly interested in how constraints, arising from system requirements, shape decision-making in artificial intelligence systems. My current research interests include:

  • Foundations of Reinforcement Learning, particularly in constrained dynamical systems, where agents must learn to act while satisfying operational constraints.

  • Foundations of Generative Artificial Intelligence, with an emphasis on understanding and enabling controlled generation in generative models such as large language models and diffusion models.

For prospective students

I am looking for highly motivated PhD students with a strong background in mathematics and/or programming. If you are interested in machine decision-making, especially in the areas of optimization, learning, and control under constraints, I encourage you to apply here and send me an email
